The OnexPlayer 2 Pro EVA Limited Edition Gaming Console was recently unveiled by OnexTech, featuring the powerful AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processor. During a press event, the company provided a comprehensive introduction to this innovative three-in-one gaming device, offering an opportunity for firsthand experience. Here, we will share our impressions of this console.
At first glance, two notable features caught our attention: its large size and stylish appearance. Boasting an impressive 8.4-inch screen, the handheld console exudes a sense of grandeur, while its color scheme pays homage to the iconic EVA unit. The console combines a purple base color with green and orange accents on the joysticks and buttons, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing design.
Beyond the color scheme, the console showcases numerous EVA-themed prints on its body, adding to its overall visupdual appeal. The recognizable "NERV" logo is prominently displayed below the right-hand grip, while the top of the console features the familiar "EMERGENCY" sign from the animation. The left side proudly showcases the "EVANGELION" text, representing the EVA unit, along with its iconic design. The back of the console also incorporates additional prints, further enhancing its overall allure. Notably, the console includes a built-in stand, offering added convenience.
In addition to the console itself, the package includes various peripherals and accessories that incorporate EVA and unit-inspired elements. These include an controller mount, keyboard and charger, all designed with nods to the EVA series.
OnexTech has clearly invested significant effort in the collaboration with EVA, as evident from the design of the product. The faithful reproduction of the unit's color scheme and the incorporation of classic EVA elements are impressive and leave a lasting impression. This collaboration product resonates with enthusiasts, evoking nostalgia for the days of eagerly anticipating the airing of the "EVA" animation after school. Even for those who may not have fully comprehended it back then, the allure of the stylish mecha was undeniable.
Moving beyond the collaboration elements, let's delve into the console itself. The build quality of the device is on par with its predecessors, featuring a skin-like textured UV coating that resists fingerprints and provides a comfortable grip.
The button layout follows the familiar design of classic game controllers, facilitating an easy learning curve. Similar to the previously released OnexPlayer 2, this console is equipped with the ALPS esports-grade joystick. With a tilt angle of up to 18° and a height of 7.5mm, the joystick offers precise and comfortable control. The trigger buttons and shoulder buttons also provide a satisfying tactile feel.
Thanks to the ergonomic S-curve design of the grip area, the console ensures a comfortable hold. During actual gameplay, the console feels comfortable to hold, although it is slightly larger compared to the miniPro from the previous year.
The console features an 8.4-inch screen with a resolution of 2560x1600, delivering fine and detailed visuals on a compact display.
The OnexPlayer 2 Pro EVA Limited Edition is defined as a three-in-one gaming computer due to its modular design. It can function as a handheld gaming console, a tablet when the controllers are detached, and even a mini laptop when combined with the magnetic keyboard accessory. The console offers touchscreen capabilities and supports 4096-level pressure sensitivity for stylus input. While the small screen may limit certain use cases, it is still possible to connect a mouse and enjoy games like League of Legends or Counter-Strike.
The keyboard accessory provides a satisfying typing experience, featuring longer key travel than anticipated, albeit with a compact layout.
